The more prepared you are with your packing supplies checklist before you start packing up your life

Boxes

Moving boxes are one of the most important things you'll need to pack for your long-distance move. Not only do they provide a safe place to put all your stuff, but they protect fragile items like dishes and glasses from breaking enroute. There are several different types of moving box options out there, so make sure you choose ones that are right for your items.

Bubble Wrap

Bubble wrap is great for packing breakables like dishes, mugs, and glassware. Its cushioning properties will protect your items during the long journey to their new home. This material can also be used as a buffer between furniture legs so they don't scratch up your floors when you move them out of storage at your old place or when you move them into your new home.

Large Moving Blankets

Moving blankets are great for protecting large items, like sofas and armchairs, from getting damaged during the long-distance move. These soft materials will wrap snugly around each piece of furniture to ensure a safe journey all the way to their final destination in your house.

Furniture Pads

If you'd rather not use moving blankets, furniture pads are a great alternative. These durable materials serve the same purpose as moving blankets by protecting your large furniture items from getting damaged while in transit or during relocation inside your new home. They're also easier to store than bulky blankets and can be used again for future moves.

Packing Tape

Tape is a must-have for any packing job, especially when moving long-distance. It's great for sealing boxes closed and can also be used to secure furniture pads in place. Be sure to have plenty of this on hand before you start packing!

Permanent Markers

When labeling your boxes, it's important to be as specific and concise as possible. You don't want your boxes getting too heavy or you'll have a problem when moving them onto the truck for shipping. Be sure to include room numbers in large bold lettering, especially if there are multiple rooms in your new home that require individual attention like kitchens and bathrooms.

Plastic containers

Plastic containers are great for packing non-fragile items like books, toys, and clothes. They're also moisture-resistant which is perfect for storing any seasonal items you don't want to take up too much space in your new home. Plus, they stack easily so you can save on storage space when unpacking at your new place.

Newspaper

Newspaper is a great way to protect your fragile items during transport. It's also biodegradable so you can recycle it when you're finished with it. Place your breakables in individual boxes and then line the bottom of the box with crumpled-up newspaper before packing them in tightly. This will help keep them from moving around and getting damaged during transport.

Packing Paper or Plastic Wrap

Packing paper or plastic wrap is perfect for wrapping your fragile items before packing them in a box. This will help to keep them from getting damaged during the move. Be sure to use plenty of it, especially if you're packing delicate glassware or dishes.

Shrink Wrap Film

Shrink Wrap film is a great way to protect your furniture during transport. It can be used on sofas, chairs, tables, and even mattresses. Just make sure the item you're wrapping is completely dry before applying the shrink wrap. And don't forget to use tape to secure it in place!

Scissors or Box Cutters

Box cutters are great when you need to open a cardboard box quickly, but they can also be used for cutting tape, shrink wrap film, or packing paper. Be sure to have one on hand in case your moving day goes longer than expected and you run out of supplies! Scissors will work just as well if that's what you have on hand.

Gloves (rubber household gloves)

Gloves are a must when packing up your kitchen. You'll be dealing with sharp knives, broken glass, and other hazardous materials so it's important to protect your hands. Rubber household gloves will do the trick and they can easily be disposed of after use.

Trash bags

Trash bags are perfect for packing up your garbage and any unwanted items. You can also use them to store dirty clothes or linens until you have time to wash them. They're lightweight and take up very little space, so they're great for packing on the go!

Cleaning supplies

It's a good idea to have your cleaning supplies on hand before you start packing up. You don't want to be scrambling for Windex and paper towels halfway through the move when it's time to clean up after packing dirty dishes! Keep toilet bowl cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, surface wipes, and paper towels in an easy-to-access spot so you can stay on top of the cleaning throughout the move.

The following items are not necessary, but can make packing and unpacking a lot easier if you have them on hand:

A Hand Truck or Moving Cart

A hand truck or moving cart can be very helpful when moving large items like furniture. If you don't have one, see if a friend or family member does and ask to borrow it for the day. It will make your move go a lot smoother!

Dollies

If you're not using a hand truck, dollies can also be helpful for moving furniture. Just make sure the items you're moving are light enough to be moved on a dolly.

Mattress Cover

Mattress covers are great for ensuring the cleanliness of your mattresses during transport. Whether you're moving across town or long-distance, chances are they won't be pristine when you get to your new home because of all the handling they'll endure overtime in route. Be sure to purchase a mattress cover with breathable fabric so you don't have to deal with any nasty smells when you finally unwrap them.

Plastic Floor Protection

Plastic sheeting is perfect for protecting your floors and carpets from dirt and dust during the move. It can also be used to protect furniture if you don't have any shrink wrap film handy. Just make sure you lay it out before you start packing so you don't have to worry about it later on in the process.
